Barcelona and Real Madrid meet in the first LaLiga Clasico of the season. This will be the first match between the teams without Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi since 2009. Ronaldo moved to Juventus during the summer, while Messi suffered a fractured arm in his side's win over Sevilla last time out. However, there is still plenty of star power on the field in a crucial clash. Both teams have been far from their best in the early stages of the campaign. Barcelona rounded into form with an impressive win over Sevilla before defeating Inter in the Champions League during the week. Ernesto Valverde's men can move back to the top of LaLiga with a win over their rivals after being displaced by Atletico Madrid yesterday. Real Madrid cannot afford to lose this game. Julen Lopetegui is under huge pressure in his role as his team have failed to win their last four matches in the Primera Division, including back-to-back defeats at the hands of Alaves and Levante. A triumph over Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League stem the tide slightly, but a defeat would put Lopetegui in a very delicate position.
Here come the players. It's almost time for the action.
Barcelona are in complete control of El Clasico at the break at Camp Nou courtesy of goals from Philippe Coutinho and Luis Suarez. Real Madrid were all over the place at the back and lacked any penetration going forward, allowing the home side to seize command of the contest. Coutinho opened the scoring as he finished a sublime team move down the left flank from Jordi Alba's cross. Barca need a video review from the referee to notch their second after Suarez was bundled over by Raphael Varane in the box. The decision was given in favour of Ernesto Valverde's men, allowing the Uruguayan to convert from 12 yards.
Although Barcelona have their 2-0 lead, they will feel that they have left goals out on the pitch in the first half. There should be plenty more to come from the home side if they continue in the same manner in the second period. For Madrid and Julen Lopetegui, they have to conjure something at the break to get them back into the contest otherwise this could be an embarrasing defeat.
Both teams are in action next week in the Copa del Rey as Barcelona play Cultural Leonesa on the road, while Madrid are also away at Melilla.
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
