And we're off! Portugal get us underway, attacking from left to right.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today's friendly game between Argentina and Portugal. My name is Ben Cullimore and I will be keeping you up to date with all of the action from Old Trafford.
However, despite their less than convincing performances as of late, Friday evening's narrow 1-0 win at home to Armenia means that Portugal go into 2015 in second place in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, just one point behind Denmark and with a game in hand over the group leaders. After suffering a surprising 1-0 defeat against Albania in their opening game of the campaign, they have bounced back to win their last two on the trot, with Cristiano Ronaldo, ever their saviour, scoring both of the winning goals.
Argentina head into tonight's exciting clash on the back of last week's 2-1 win against Croatia at Upton Park, where Cristian Ansaldi and Lionel Messi both found the back of the net to help La Albiceleste overturn an early deficit and leave London with their second win in as many games. The World Cup runners-up have impressed since their return from Brazil, winning three of their four friendly games, and tonight's clash could see them extend their winning run even further against a Portugal side that have looked far from convincing in recent weeks.
There's just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let's have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening...
Argentina XI (4-3-3): Romero; Roncaglia, Demichelis, Otamendi, Ansaldi; Biglia, Mascherano, Pastore; Messi, Higuain, Di Maria.
Argentina boss Gerardo Martino has decided to make seven changes to the side that won 2-1 against Croatia in their last outing, with only Sergio Romero, Cristian Ansaldi, Angel Di Maria and Lionel Messi retaining their places.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Portugal XI (4-3-3): Rui Patricio; Bosingwa, Alves, Pepe, Guerreiro; Mountinho, W. Carvalho, Tiago; Nani, Ronaldo, Danny.
Portugal substitutes: Silva, A. Gomes, Lopes, Beto, Eder, Postiga, Mario, Cedric, Fonte, R. Carvalho, Quaresma, T. Gomes, Vieirinha.
Meanwhile, Fernando Santos has made just two changes to the Portugal side that started last week's clash against Armenia, with Bruno Alves and William Carvalho coming in to replace Ricardo Carvalho and Helder Postiga, respectively.
HALF-TIME: ARGENTINA 0-0 PORTUGAL
Argentina have arguably been the most impressive of the two sides so far, with Messi and Di Maria finding plenty of joy down both sides of the pitch. However, Portugal have slowly but surely grown into the game, and they looked dangerous in front of goal as the first half came to a close. The second period is surely going to be a very close one that could end up going either way.
The two teams are making their way onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: ARGENTINA 0-1 PORTUGAL
As soon as Ronaldo and Messi were brought off at half-time, the game turned into an incredibly boring one, but somehow Portugal have managed to leave Manchester with a 1-0 win after a great diving header from the substitute left-back Guerreiro with one of the last touches of the evening. They were arguably second best all night long, but Argentina failed to take their chances in front of goal and, as a result, they leave empty-handed.
My name is Ben Cullimore and it's been an absolute pleasure describing the action to you this evening. Until next time, goodbye!
