We're underway in this World Cup qualifying clash.
Good evening and welcome to the 2022 World Cup qualifying clash between Germany and Iceland at the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena.
Germany kick off their Group J campaign on home soil in their bid to secure qualification for the 2022 World Cup at the first attempt. Joachim Low will begin the qualification campaign before handing the reins to a new manager after Euro 2020, and he will be desperate to leave Die Mannschaft in a strong position for his successor. Germany suffered a humiliating defeat in their last outing against Spain in the Nations League, losing 6-0 on the road. They will be determined to put that loss behind them with a dominant outing tonight.
GERMANY (4-3-3): Manuel Neuer; Lukas Klostermann, Antonio Rudiger, Matthias Ginter, Emre Can; Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Ilkay Gundogan; Leroy Sane, Serge Gnabry, Kai Havertz.
GERMANY SUBS: Philipp Max, Jonathan Tah, Jamal Musiala, Timo Werner, Amin Younes, Kevin Trapp, Florin Neuhaus, Florian Witz, Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
ICELAND (4-1-4-1): Hannes Halldorsson; Alfons Sampsted, Sverrir Ingason, Kari Arnason, Hordur Magnusson; Aron Gunnarsson; Birkir Bjarnason, Runar Mar Sigurjonsson, Victor Palsson, Arnor Ingvi Traustason; Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
ICELAND SUBS: Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson, Ragnar Sigurdsson, Johan Gudmundsson, Kolbeinn Sigthorsson, Arnor Sigurdsson, Holmbert Fridjohnsson, Ogmundur Kristinsson, Runar Alex Runnarsson, Hjortur Hermannsson, Albert Gudmundsson, Ari Freyr Skulason.
The players are out on the field so we should be underway shortly.
Iceland enter their qualifying campaign off the back of five-straight defeats, including a 2-1 loss to Hungary to miss out on a place at the European Championships. Arnar Vidarsson takes control of a team that were crushed 4-0 by England last time out in their Nations League contest at Wembley, therefore he faces a challenge to rebuild their confidence. They will not want to begin their qualifying campaign on a low note, although it will take a special performance to avoid another defeat.
Iceland did have one opening in the first half when Runar Mar Sigurjónsson's deflected effort travelled just wide of the post. However, the visitors have been on the back foot for the majority of the contest. It will take something special for them to avoid defeat this evening.
Germany are next in action on the road to Romania, while Iceland face Armenia away on the same day.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
