The referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez checks his watch and Madrid get this Supercopa de Espana final underway!
Hello! Welcome to our live text commentary of this Supercopa de Espana final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Atletico were runners-up in La Liga last year but currently sit five points behind their rivals in the league. Diego Simeone's men still thrive on their underdog status though, pulling off a late comeback against Barcelona to win 3-2 here a few days ago. The two Madrid sides played a very dull 0-0 last time they met in the league in September. Let's hope this game is better!
SUBS: Eder Militao, Marcelo, Vinicius Junior, Mariano, James Rodriguez, Alphonse Areola, Rodrygo.
ATLETICO MADRID (4-4-2): Jan Oblak (c); Kieran Trippier, Felipe, Jose Gimenez, Renan Lodi; Angel Correa, Thomas Partey, Hector Herrera, Saul Niguez; Joao Felix, Alvaro Morata.
SUBS: Stefan Savic, Vitolo, Mario Hermoso, Antonio Adan, Santiago Arias, Rodrigo Riquelme, Marcos Llorente.
And so the first four-team Supercopa comes to an end with a Madrid derby. Madrid qualified through finishing third in La Liga last season. Having seen off Copa del Rey winners Valencia 3-1 in the semi-finals, it's clear that Zinedine Zidane's side are getting back to their best.
It's no La Liga or Champions League, but winning the Supercopa would be a useful barometer for both sides' ambitions this season. Madrid have won it 10 times before, last lifting it in 2017 when they saw off Barcelona 5-1 on aggregate. Atletico have lifted it twice, most recently in 2014. That was the only previous time the Supercopa has been a Madrid derby, as Atletico edged out Madrid 2-1 over two legs.
REAL MADRID (4-3-2-1): Thibaut Courtois; Daniel Carvajal, Sergio Ramos (c), Raphael Varane, Ferland Mendy; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Federico Valverde; Luka Modric, Isco; Luka Jovic.
It's a lively atmosphere at King Abdullah Sports City and the two sides are out on the pitch! Madrid will wear their iconic white home kit while Atletico will play in their red and white striped shirts and blue shorts. It's on!
That was a pulsating 90 minutes in which neither Madrid side could find a goal, despite their best efforts. Both teams had opportunities to steal a win late on - Madrid through Valverde and Rodrygo, Atletico through Morata and Thomas. There'll now be 30 more minutes to decide who'll claim the Supercopa!
Still, the two Madrid sides can't be separated. Madrid are still on top, yet Atletico had the best chance through Vitolo at the start of the half. 15 more minutes await before this will have to be decided via the dreaded penalty shootout.
The Italian journalist Gianni Brera once declared that the perfect football match would end 0-0. He may well have been right. This Supercopa de Espana final has had everything except goals. Madrid have been on top overall but Atletico almost nicked this late on as Valverde received his marching orders. The winners will now be decided via penalties.
1-0 MADRID - ATLETICO MISS! Saul steps forward and sends Courtois the wrong way, but his shot bounces back off the left-hand post and out!
1-0 MADRID! Madrid take the first penalty. Carvajal steps up and smashes it past Oblak with no problems.
2-0 MADRID! Rodrygo fires the ball into the top right corner. Oblak has no chance of keeping it out.
2-0 MADRID - ATLETICO MISS! Thomas fires straight at Courtois and Madrid's keeper makes the stop!
3-0 MADRID! Modric steps up and fires the ball to the left of Oblak. Atletico have to score to stay in this now.
3-1 MADRID! Trippier keeps his cool and slots past Courtois. Madrid still have the chance to win now though...
4-1 MADRID! Ramos fires home and runs off! He's handed the Supercopa de Espana to Real Madrid!
FULL TIME: REAL MADRID 0 (4) - 0 (1) ATLETICO MADRID
Madrid prepare to lift the Supercopa as the trophy presentation commences. This'll prove a mighty boost to them as they challenge for La Liga and the Champions League. Atletico should use the disappointment of this match to drive them too. They're one of the toughest sides to beat in Europe and can beat the very best on their day. This just wasn't it.
Madrid step up to lift the Supercopa! They may well be lifting bigger trophies come the end of the season. That's all this time. Goodbye!
