Portugal have struggled for consistency thus far in their qualifying campaign having won only three of their opening six fixtures. Fernando Santos’ side currently sit second in Group B and can secure qualification if they beat Edgaras Jankauskas’ team and Serbia fail to win against Luxembourg. Lithuania, meanwhile, come into the match at the bottom of the group with just one point to their name. Despite no longer being able to qualify, and having conceded 19 goals in seven matches, the away side will need to improve defensively if they are to secure their first group win.
The teams are out, and kick-off will soon be upon us here at Estadio Algarve.
The home side will be pleased with their performance thus far and will look to continue in much the same fashion after the restart. Ronaldo and Silva have caused Lithuania all kinds of problems throughout the opening 45 minutes and both will be vital if the hosts are to build on their advantage after the break. Lithuania, meanwhile, can count themselves lucky that Portugal only have a two-goal lead. The visitors have had some joy down the right wing through Novikovas, who will be vital in driving Jankauskas’ team up the field in seeking to ease the defensive workload.
That brings an end to our coverage of the European Championship Qualifier between Portugal and Lithuania at Estadio Algarve. Thank you very much for joining us. Goodbye!
Following results elsewhere, Portugal’s hopes of qualification now go down to their final group match against Luxembourg. Lithuania, meanwhile, finish their campaign without a win, and return to action with a friendly against New Zealand next time out.
