Hello and welcome to the live commentary of the Champions League last 16 clash between Schalke and Manchester City.
Schalke are out of form at the moment, having only won four of their last 13 matches in all competitions. They sit 14th in the Bundesliga after a 0-0 home draw with Freiburg at the weekend. Domenico Tedesco’s side will be low on confidence and face a very tough task against an in-form Manchester City side.
Manchester City have won 12 of their last 13 matches. The goals have been flying in of late, scoring 10 in their last two. Pep Guardiola’s side are still fighting for all four trophies and will fancy their chances of a convincing win this evening ahead of the League Cup final this Sunday.
SCHALKE (3-4-1-2): Ralf Fahrmann; Jeffrey Bruma, Salif Sane, Matija Nastastic; Daniel Caligiuri, Suat Serdar, Weston McKennie, Bastian Oczipka; Nabil Bentaleb; Mark Uth, Hamza Mendyl.
SUBS: Rabbi Matondo, Amine Harit, Alexander Nubel, Guido Burgstaller, Ahmed Kutucu, Sebastian Rudy, Steven Skrzybski.
SUBS: Riyad Mahrez, Danilo, Leroy Sane, Vincent Kompany, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Arijanet Muric, Phil Foden.
MANCHESTER CITY (3-2-4-1): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Aymeric Laporte; Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan; Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Raheem Sterling; Sergio Aguero.
Tedesco will be absolutely delighted with the score. Schalke were outplayed for the majority of the first half, but rode their luck to win and convert two penalties. Tedesco will be frustrated with the sloppy defending that led to Aguero's goal, however. Guardiola will be very disappointed and he may look to make changes early in the second half. Leroy Sane could make a difference off the bench.
Manchester City are in the box seat thanks to Sane and Sterling’s late goals. Coming from behind with 10 men is the perfect preparation for their League Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday. Tedesco will be very disappointed with the defending for the first and third goals as they limited City to long-range efforts for much of the match. Schalke face Mainz, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Werder Bremen in their next three matches as they look to return to form before the second leg of this tie.
Thank you for joining our live commentary this evening. Goodbye!
