We're underway at the Bernabeu.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Madrid derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu.
Both teams have an opportunity this evening as Barcelona dropped another two points today, drawing against Athletic Bilbao. Real Madrid could leapfrog the Catalan club with a victory, while Atletico could join them level on points with a triumph over their rivals.
It has been a strange start to the season for the elite teams in LaLiga. Madrid themselves slumped to a heavy 3-0 defeat on the road during the week against Sevilla. It was their first loss in the league under Julen Lopetegui, who saw his side taken apart in the first half as Andre Silva netted a brace along with a strike from Wissam Ben Yedder. Lopetegui will be looking for a reponse from his team tonight.
Let's look at the two teams this evening, starting with the home side.
Atletico have responded from their stuttering start to the season. Diego Simeone's men dropped points against Celta Vigo and Eibar earlier in the campaign, but have produced back-to-back wins in the league over Getafe and Huesca to move back into third place. Simeone will be eyeing a statement performance against his side's rivals to get the edge over his new adversary in the Madrid dugout.
Real Madrid subs: Keylor Navas, Mariano Diaz, Lucas Vazquez, Marcos Llorente, Sergio Reguilon, Dani Ceballos, Vinicius Junior.
ATLETICO MADRID (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Juanfran, Jose Gimenez, Diego Godin, Filipe Luis; Koke, Rodrigo, Saul Niguez, Thomas Lemar; Diego Costa, Antoine Griezmann.
Atletico Madrid subs: Antonio Adan, Santiago Arias, Thomas Partey, Nikola Kalinic, Angel Correa, Lucas Hernandez, Vitolo.
Simeone has made two changes to his team that beat Huesca during the week. Rodrigo and Saul are favoured ahead of Correa and Partey in the midfield, sending both players down the bench. Filipe Luis is preferred ahead of Lucas Hernandez.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Thibaut Courtois; Dani Carvajal, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Nacho Fernandez; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Gareth Bale, Karim Benzmea, Marco Asensio.
Madrid have made one change to their side that was beaten by Sevilla during the week. Marcelo misses out due to injury and is replaced by Carvajal. Nacho slides over to the left-back position. Isco remains sidelined after suffering appendicitis, leaving Asensio to partner Bale and Benzema in the final third.
It's goalless at the break in the Madrid derby at the Bernabeu. Atletico will head into the break feeling that they should be ahead as Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa both missed one-on-one opportunities against Thibaut Courtois. Gareth Bale guided an effort inches wide of the post for Madrid, who have been frustrated in the final third for the majority of the first period.
Diego Simeone will be the happier of the two managers in the context of the game, although he will feel that matters could been even better for his team. Julen Lopetegui may have a tinge of concern that his team have struggled to open up their rivals, while they've looked troubled at times on the break. A crucial second half awaits at the Bernabeu.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid play out a goalless draw in the Madrid derby. The result suits Diego Simeone's men a lot more than the home side. Julen Lopetegui's team fail to score for the second game on the bounce as Marco Asensio and Gareth Bale both missed good opportunities. Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa could have put Atleti ahead in the first half, but were guilty of poor finishing themselves. However, Atletico become the first side since Valencia in the 1940s to go six matches unbeaten in a row at the Bernabeu. Bale was forced off at half-time with an injury and if that proves to be serious, Madrid could be in trouble as Karim Benzema continues to misfire up front.
