Good evening and welcome to tonight's live coverage of the La Liga contest between Valencia and Atletico Madrid from the Mestalla.
These two giants of the Spanish game are about to play in their first match of the new campaign and both come into the contest in decent form. Valencia have won two of their last five friendlies, including victories over Everton and Bayer Leverkusen. Atletico have also won two of their last five and they were victorious in their battle against arch rivals Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup last week.
Tonight's TEAM NEWS coming up...
Valencia Starting XI (4-4-2): Neto, Cristiano Piccini, Ezequiel Garay, Gabriel, Jose Gaya, Carlos Soler, Daniel Parejo (c), Geoffrey Kondogbia, Daniel Wass, Rodrigo Moreno, Santi Mina.
Valencia SUBS: Ferran Torres, Toni Lato, Denis Cheryshev, Michy Batshuayi, Kevin Gameiro, Jaume Domenech, Mouctar Diakhab.
Atletico Madrid Starting XI (4-4-2): Jan Oblak, Juanfran, Stefan Savic, Diego Godin, Filipe Luís, Ángel Correa, Saul Niguez, Koke, Thomas Lemar, Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa.
Atletico SUBS: Jose Gimenez, Nikola Kalinic, Rodrigo, Thomas Partey, Vitolo, Antonio Adan, Gelson Martins.
Valencia boss Marcelino has gone with a 4-4-2 to try and match up to Atletico this evening but he will feel the absence of Francis Coquelin in the middle of midfield. Diego Simeone is without the suspended Lucas Hernandez and he is replaced by Filipe Luis. Angel Correa also comes into the starting XI after being on the bench for the UEFA Super Cup win.
Kick off just minutes away now as both teams enter the field of play.
The referee brings an end to the first 45 minutes and it has been an entertaining game so far. Correa's goal is the only real moment of magic from either side but Valencia have had a number of half chances.
There's every chance Atletico will just try to counter tonight and hold onto this one-nil advantage. Valencia need to work the ball into the box more as most of their shots have been from long range. Parejo's vision will be key, while Rodrigo has looked sharp on occasions.
The referee brings the game to an end and that was a solid start from both of these two giants of the Spanish game. Both will be expected to compete for the Champions League places and either side could have won this evening. Atletico made a superb start but looked tired in parts, perhaps their UEFA Super Cup exploits eventually caught up with them.
Rodrigo, Parejo and Wass all looked in the mood tonight and that bodes well for Marcelino with Batshuayi and Gameiro on the bench. They have a more competitive squad this season and will certainly feel they can challenge Atletico in the battle to catch Real Madrid and Barcelona.
That is all for tonight's coverage folks. Thanks for joining us, goodbye!
