Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s LaLiga game between Malaga and Atletico Madrid at the La Rosaleda.
The LaLiga table is grim reading for Malaga fans and with second-placed Atletico Madrid as their opponents, things look likely to get worse before they can get any better. The home side are seven points adrift of safety at the foot of the table and have not won a league game since November, when they beat Deportivo 3-2 at home.
Midfielder Recio will miss today’s tie after picking up an injury in the defeat to Las Palmas last weekend. He will join wingers Juankar and Gonzalo Castro on the side lines. Malaga were active in the winter transfer window however, with the likes of wingers Isaac Success, Samu Garcia and midfielder Mehdi Lacen among the numbers ready to make their mark in the bid for survival.
Atletico Madrid continued their impressive league form last weekend when they beat Valencia 1-0 at home, a result which took them nine points clear of the third-placed side. The win means Diego Simeone’s side have now gone seven games unbeaten in the league, winning six, although they remain nine points adrift of leaders Barcelona.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
The away side will be heavy favourites to beat LaLiga’s bottom club this afternoon, but will be without a couple of key players due to injury. Defenders Stefan Savic and Diego Godin picked up thigh and jaw injuries respectively in the win over Valencia, but left-back Filipe Luis could return from the hamstring injury that has kept him out of the side since December.
Atletico Madrid go in at the break a goal to the good, after Antoine Griezmann reacted quickly to score 40 seconds into the game. What followed has been a fairly dull affair in truth as both sides cancelled each other out. The chances were few and far between with Ideye firing Malaga's only real chance narrowly wide and Costa heading over at the back post as well.
The teams are back out on the pitch, ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: MALAGA 0-1 ATLETICO MADRID.
Malaga came out all guns blazing in the second half but they could find no way through a well-disciplined and very well organised Atletico defence. A lively second half was beginning to simmer down before a lengthy delay due to Lacen's head injury effectively took the sting out of the tie. Atletico had a chance late on to seal the three points but Correa's poor touch took it away from them. In the end, Antoine Griezmann's goal after 40 seconds secured the vital three points that put them six points behind leaders Barcelona. Malaga, meanwhile, could be up to 10 points adrift of safety if other results go against them this weekend.
