Penalty shootout: S. Lichtsteiner (Switzerland) scored!
Penalty shootout: R. Lewandowski (Poland) scored!
119'
HOW HAS DERDIYOK NOT SCORED?! Seferovic makes a rare run down the left channel this time and actually manages to dig out a wicked cross to the front post. The substitute meets it but struggles to find a yard to get the shot away, with possession eventually being pounced upon by the keeper!
117'
J. Djourou gets yellow.
Another deserved booking here much in the same vein as Pazdan's from a few minutes ago. The guilty party is Djourou who cynically trips up Milik to stop a dangerous-looking Poland counter.
115'
Five minutes to go of extra-time here and both sides are running out to effectively have their fate within their own hands, as we are all aware of the lottery which penalties can prove to be. Then again, you wouldn't want to lose it at this stage either!
Minute
Description
113'
SAAAAAAAAVE FROM FABIANSKI! The Poland goalkeeper may have just kept his nation in Euro 2016 as he stays big between the sticks to deny a header from Derdiyok, who seemed destined to give the Swiss the lead!
111'
M. Pazdan gets yellow.
Another yellow card here and Pazdan will take it without much protest as he shoves Derdiyok to the floor down the right touchline to prevent a Swiss counter-attack. A small price to pay at this stage, you would feel!
109'
Xhaka finds Shaqiri beautifully down the right wing and the Stoke attacking midfielder leaves two defenders for dead with a cheeky bit of skill before bursting to the byline. He squeezes out a teasing cross into the box, but Glik commandingly heads the danger away.
107'
Lewandowski, who has had yet another fairly quiet game, picks up the ball down the left channel and battles hard to try and retain possession for Poland. In the end, though, the Bayern man is outnumbered and eventually bested by the opposition defenders.
105'
We are back under way, so 15 minutes to go before the lottery of penalties!
104'
S. Peszko enters the game and replaces K. Grosicki.
Another change for Poland as Grosicki is replaced by Slawomir Peszko
103'
It has been a very typical first period of extra-time here as both sides are too afraid to push forward in fear that they may end of conceding at this late stage. If someone can take a chance, they might just win this tie for their nation, but not looking likely at the moment.
101'
T. Jodłowiec enters the game and replaces K. Mączyński.
Mercifully, Poland make their first change of the match finally and leaving the action is Maczynski, who has been struggling with cramp for quite a few minutes now. His replacement will be Tomasz Jodlowiec in that Polish engine room.
99'
Poland are doing a little bit better now and are managing to pin Switzerland back with a period of sustained possession. Nothing much is coming from it, but it is important that they control the ball for a while so that they can conserve some energy.
97'
Surprisingly, Nawanks is yet to make a Polish change as of yet, which is certainly strange considering we are now fairly deep into extra-time. Surely it won't be too long before we see someone emerging from the bench as some of the players out there are really struggling!
95'
Shaqiri is naturally full of confidence after scoring that incredible equaliser, and so is attempting strikes from all angles now. The latest is a delightful left-footed chip towards the far corner, but Fabianski sees it over the bar relatively comfortably.
93'
Lichsteiner makes his way down the right wing and bursts a gut to hit the byline before attempting a cross into the danger area. The Swiss captain just overran it slightly, though, which gifts Poland the goal-kick to take the pressure off. An impressive feat of fitness considering the time of the game!
91'
Here we go! Extra-time is under way!
90' +2
Poland get the chance for the winner for a free-kick from around 30 yards, which will be taken by Milik. The Ajax man steps up for the set-piece but the attempt is woeful and ends up flying harmlessly wide of the left-hand post.
90'
Four minutes of added time have been allocated by the referee now so there is still time for someone to prove themselves as a hero for their respective nation. At this stage, though, will both sides settle for extra-time?
88'
Grosicki sends a corner into the area and Glik and Pazdan both try their luck with strikes on goal from loose balls. Unfortunately for Poland, the two chances fall to the centre-backs and it shows as one shot is easily blocked and the other goes high into the stand.
86'
Poland are just, perhaps intelligently, taking the sting out of proceedings at the moment with a period of patient, sustained possession to try and curb the Swiss ascendancy. It looks like we are heading for extra-time, folks, unless someone can pop up with a winner!
84'
There is only one team who looks like they are going to win now, and that is Switzerland! The confidence is oozing out of Petkovic's men now, and with Lewandowki and Milik toiling up top for Poland, Nawanka has real cause for concern in these latter stages!
82'
X. Shaqiri has scored a goal for Switzerland! Assist by E. Derdiyok.
GOOOOOAAAALLLL!!! GOOOAAAAALL FOR SWITZERLAND! AN ABSOLUTE DREAM FROM SHAQIRI! The team in red make their way down the left wing and a cross is speculatively sent into the danger area. Possession falls to the Stoke man, who lights up the stadium with a stunning bicycle kick into the bottom right corner from 18 yards! One-one!
Assist Eren Derdiyok
81'
You have to hand it to the Swiss, and especially their fans, who are really giving it their all to get back into this game now. With a tepid opening 45 minutes now come and gone, though, is it too little, too late for Shaqiri and co.?
79'
THE CROSSBAR DENIES SWITZERLAND! The Swiss have the opposition camped inside their own penalty area with a series of shots on goal which are blocked. Possession eventually drops to Seferovic, who attempts to put a poor tournament behind him with a rasper of a strike aimed towards the top corner, but unfortunately for him it cannons off the woodwork!
77'
G. Fernandes enters the game and replaces V. Behrami.
Third and final change from Vladimir Petkovic and it will see Gelson Fernandes enter the action to try and save his nation's Euros dream. He will replace Valon Behrami who appears to be struggling with a hamstring injury.
76'
This hasn't been a summer tournament when players have had to worry too much about the conditions, but it is extremely hot and humid in Saint-Etienne this afternoon which is making for a lot of tired legs out there. As legs tire, so do minds, which means some spaces just might open up for more goals. Switzerland could be doing with one!
74'
WHAT A FANTASTIC SAVE FROM FABIANSKI!! Switzerland are awarded the free-kick around 25 yards out which Shaqiri and Rodriguez subsequently stand over. The Wolfsburg man is taked with the strike on goal and sends a lovely attempt curling ominously towards the top corner, but he is thwarted by the Pole, who somehow gets across his line to tip over the bar! Still 1-0!
72'
Piszczek makes his way down the right wing unopposed and eventually cuts inside to take advantage of the space available. The Dortmund man eventually pulls the trigger with his weaker left foot, and it shows as the attempt harmlessly flashes north of the crossbar.
70'
E. Derdiyok enters the game and replaces A. Mehmedi.
Another substitution from Switzerland here and it is a positive one as a striker, Eren Derdiyok, enters the action to replace an attacking midfielder in the form of Mehmedi, who looks to have picked up a knock. The substitute will go up top alongside Seferovic now, so it is all or nothing for the team in red!
69'
Well, the Swiss fans are up in arms at the moment as there is another Poland player down injured, with their thinking being there is some unprofessional behaviour going on. Milik genuinely looks injured though, and appeared to have went over nastily on his ankle. No sympathy from the Switzerland faithful!
67'
A small break in play at the moment as Fabianski is currently down receiving treatment after a collision in the air with Embolo, who was desperately trying to get on the end of a looping cross into the box. There was no malice in the challenge from the substitute, but the Poland goalkeeper did take a hammering.
65'
Just about approaching the last third of the game now and as it stands, Poland will be the first nation to reach the last-16 if they can see out this result. The Swiss have been much better in the second half, but Fabianski has only really been tested by a couple of long-range strikes.
63'
We had a wonderful flurry of shots on goal in the 10 minutes following the break, but after that duo of bookings the flow of the game has been interrupted by niggling fouls here and there. Unsue who this suits, really, as Poland would obviously take the 1-0 win with the rest of the game playing out scrappily.
61'
Embolo's first contribution to proceedings is to commit a daft foul on Lewandowski, who has only recently came back on after being taken out by Schar. The Poland captain is just taking a little while to shake off the cobwebs from that altercation, which was significant to say the least. He'll be fine, though.
59'
First change of the match now and no surprises that it comes from the Swiss, who introduce Breel Embolo in place of Dzemaili.
58'
B. Embolo enters the game and replaces B. Džemaili.
A. Jędrzejczyk gets yellow.
The yellow cards are coming thick and fast now and the latest guilty party is Jedrzejczyj who leaves a little something on Lichsteiner, who typically makes the most of it.
56'
First yellow card of the match now and it is just about the most deserved one you will see in the European Championships as Schar completely takes out Lewandowski down the left wing with a scything tackle. A melee ensues, and the booking soon follows for the Swiss defender.
55'
F. Schär gets yellow.
54'
ANOTHER SAVE AGAIN FROM SOMMER! This match has BURST into line since the break with both sides trading shots on goal end-to-end. Blaszczykowski nearly scores a carbon copy of the goal he scored in the previous match against Ukraine with a curled strike to the corner, but on this occasion the goalkeeper manages to make the stop.
52'
SAAAAAAAAAVE FROM FABIANSKI! As mentioned a moment ago, Shaqiri is looking a lot more prominent in the game now and collects the ball down the right wing before cutting inside on that cultured left foot. He goes for a rasper of a strike towards the right corner, but the Swansea keeper is equal to it and makes the strong block.
50'
SAVE FROM SOMMER! Grosicki goes on yet another marauding run into the penalty area, twisting and turning as he goes. The Bayern striker eventually receives the ball to feet before attempting to stab a strike into the top corner with zero back lift, but the Swiss keeper reads it and clutches out of the air. Very intelligent attempt.
48'
Positive start to the second period from Switzerland, who already look like they are going to show some more attacking ambition than they did in the opening 45 minutes. Shaqiri appears to be the best bet for the Swiss, as the Stoke man looks to pull the strings from that right wing coming inside.
46'
We are back under way between Switzerland and Poland!
45'
One minute of added time has been allocated by the referee here, which sounds about right as the game has been relatively free-flowing.
43'
Well, despite many people's expectations of a cagey affair throughout, we have been given a goal here which means the Swiss are going to have to come out of their shell to try and keep their Euro 2016 dream alive. Half-time coming up, though, so time to recover.
41'
Switzerland have responded superbly to going a goal behind and are actually looking the most threatening side now, with Mehmedi now driving down the left wing. Poland sense the ascendancy though, and get back into defensive positions to make a couple of vital blocks on the edge of the area.
39'
J. Błaszczykowski has scored a goal for Poland! Assist by K. Grosicki.
Superb work from Grosicki to take the game to the opposition before finding Kuba to take the lead!
GOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLL FOR POLAND! NAWALKA'S CHARGES TAKE THE LEAD! Grosicki, who has been bright so far, drives directly at the Swiss defence and eventually picks out Blaszczykowski at the back post. The Pole displayed excellent composure to then slip a finish under the oncoming goalkeepr! One-nil!
37'
Switzerland have the fifth-best possession stats out of any team in the competition so far, and you can see why as they are extremely patient in their build-up play. However, with this meticulous passing style comes a lack of a constant direct threat towards goal, and with the misfiring Seferovic up top they are lacking a true threat in the box
35'
A MASSIVE CHANCE MISSED FROM SCHAR! Shaqiri sends a looping corner-kick deep into the penalty area and his compatriot meets it with a bouncing header, but it goes straight down the throat of the grateful Fabianski, who clutches the ball gratefully to his chest!
33'
It is just not happening for Milik so far in front of goal! Piszczek launches a pacey counter-attack for Poland down the right wing, with the ball eventually making its way to the back post for his compatriot, but the volleyed attempt on goal is again blazed over from the Ajax frontman, who is yet to add to his tally from netting in the opening match!
31'
Lewandowski chests down expertly and holds off the attentions of the defender to swivel sharply around 40 yards out. He finds Grosicki with a precision pass who attempts to lob on the oncoming Sommer, but there was a little too much on the attempt which eventually floats harmlessly over.
29'
BAD MISS FROM KRYCHOWIAK! Grosicki stands over a corner-kick deep down the left wing and whips a brilliant cross to the back post for the Sevilla man, but the subsequent header on goal is skewed terribly high and wide over the bar. He had a clear sight of goal there, but couldn't take advantage!
27'
Grosicki pops up down the left wing and picks up the ball before going on a marauding run into opposition territory. He opens his stride and makes it all the way to the byline before going to hit the cross in, only for the retreating Behrami, who did superbly well to make up the ground, to make the block for a corner.
25'
Rodriguez will always provide plenty of width bombing down that left wing, and is just starting to become more prominent here. This time, he ventures forward into the final third and cuts inside on to his right foot to blast a strike on goal, but it ends up flashing the wrong side of the post.
23'
After a very promising start to proceedings, the game has reverted to the format everyone had predicted pre-match, and that is one with little goalmouth action and a regular exchange of possession. These knockout matches tend to be very tense, and there is an air of that in this encounter too now.
21'
Dzemaili pops up in the central area between the Poland defence and midfield and receives the ball to feet before attempting to turn sharply, only to go down under the challenge of Glik. Shaqiri and Rodriguez combine for the resulting free-kick, but it is slammed into the wall by the Wolfsburg left-back.
19'
Milik stands over a corner-kick down the right wing and takes it short before dashing into space. The Ajax forward goes for the first-time strike which is sent blistering towards goal, only to take a deflection on the route through to cannon out behind for another corner.
17'
Poland enjoy a decent period of pressure on the edge of the opposition penalty area, with short passes being exchanged. Possession eventually comes to Lewandowski, who attempts to pick out the run of Milik with a clever chip, but Sommer proactively comes off his line to claim out of the area.
15'
Both sides are rather tepidly exchanging possession at the moment, with not much penetration appearing in the respective final thirds. Poland looking slightly more dangerous due to the aforementioned Lewandowski, though.
13'
Lewandowski has certainly not translated his blistering club form this season into the European Championships, as even though he has appeared slightly brighter today, he yet again misses the target with a snap-shot volley from around 25 yards out in the left channel. It is never bothering the keeper, and goes wide harmlessly.
11'
SIDE-NETTING FROM DZEMAILI! Shaqiri pops up on the opposite wing this time, hugging the touchline as he receives the ball to feet. The cross inside from the Stoke man is fabulously delivered to the front post, but his compatriot only succeeds in smashing an attempt into the wrong side of the net. Decent play from the Swiss!
9'
Mehmedi drives down the left-hand side and attempts to cut back into the central area only to be stopped in his tracks by a superb Piszczek challenge. Blaszczykowski collects and mounts a similar attack down the same touchline as Poland move into the final third ominously.
7'
We are seven minutes into the game now, and it has took Switzerland this amount of time to find their feet in terms of being comfortable in possession. Behrami and Xhaka are seeing more of the ball in a nice little period of pressure, without too much penetration though it has to be said.
5'
The Swiss just cannot get out of their own half at the moment, so you have to hand it to Poland for their attitude in these early stages. One highly positive note for the team in white is that Lewandowski looks very, very energetic and full of gusto in his attempts to claim his first goal of the championships.
3'
A really cracking start to the match here, particularly from Poland who are not allowing the opposition any time at all to operate. Switzerland very nearly went a goal behind through that awful miscommunication from Sommer and Djourou, but they survive by the skin of their teeth!
2'
OH A HORRIBLE MISS FROM MILIK! Switzerland get themselves into a muddle at the back and Sommer is caught out of goal, but the Poland striker can't keep his attempt down and ends up blazing over the bar from 20 yards, even though the goal was gaping!
1'
We are under way in Saint-Etienne!
The group stage is now over, and with the knockout stages starting today, the nations still involved will be wondering how far they can make it to appease their fans. Switzerland and Poland have arguably already met expectations by reaching this round because neither have did so in the European Championships before, but with both enjoying unbeaten starts to the competition, there will be aspirations among the respective camps to go even further.
Good afternoon football fans! Welcome to LIVE coverage of the Euro 2016 clash between Switzerland and Poland from the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne.
Today's encounter promises to be fairly tight, at least in the early stages, as both sides have only managed to net two goals so far. Poland have, impressively, yet to concede, while Switzerland have only conceded once through a penalty-kick to Romania. With attacking prowess lacking and defences seemingly solid, could extra-time be on the cards for this one?
Switzerland made it to this stage by finishing second in Group A behind France, taking five points in their three openers. Poland, meanwhile narrowly missed out on top spot in Group C after having the same points, but poorer goal difference than Germany. Even with these two-placed finishes, both nations can be relatively content that they have made their way to the more favourable side of the draw, with much stronger nations squaring up in the other part.
TEAM NEWS...
There has been 10 previous clashes between the sides over the years, with Poland enjoying the better of the results with four wins and five draws, with the last victory coming back in 2001. Switzerland have not came out victorious in the fixture since all the way back in 1976, so it would certainly be an opportune time to stop the rot this afternoon!
The teams are making their way to the pitch and we are almost ready for the national anthems!
Half-time in Saint-Etienne. Poland are in pole position to make it through to the last-16 in this clash and go into the break with a narrow 1-0 lead over Switzerland thanks to a solitary strike from Jakub Blaszczykowski. Switzerland have played within themselves, and need to show more going forward if they are to stay in the tournament. Second period to come!
End of 90 minutes in Saint-Etienne. The first knockout match of the European Championships goes into extra-time as Poland and Switzerland play out the 1-1 draw, with Blaszczykowski and Xherdan Shaqiri, with the goal of the tournament, on the scoresheet for their respective nations. Nothing to separate them so far, so we will play another 30 minutes.
Half-time in extra-time.
Full-time in Saint-Etienne and this match will be decided on penalty kicks. There was nothing to separate Switzerland and Poland after 120 minutes even though Blaszczykowski and Shaqiri both get on target for their respective nations. The lottery of penalty kicks is coming up shortly!
Penalties are upon on us, and Switzerland will be up first...
GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLL! Lichsteiner dispatches his penalty superbly into the middle of the goal!
GOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL! Lewandowski finds the net for the first time in the tournament with a fantastic penalty into the top-right corner!
GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLL FOR POLAND! Milik JUST squeezes a strike past Sommer into the corner!
GOOOOAAAALLLL FOR SWITZERLAND! Shaqiri, who netted that sensational equaliser, finds the net again into the corner!
MISS FOR SWITZERLAND! XHAKA FIRES HIS PENALTY WELL WIDE OF THE GOAL! AWFUL!
GOOOOAAAAAAAAALLL FOR POLAND! GLIK SMASHES HOME!
GOOOOAAAAAAAAAALLL FOR SWITZERLAND! Rodriguez makes no mistake with a rifled finish into the corner!
GOOOOAAAAAAAAALLL FOR POLAND! Blaszczykowski coolly into the bottom corner!
GOOOOAAAAAAALLLL FOR SWITZERLAND! A delightfully taken penalty from Schar who sends the keeper the wrong way!
GOOOAAAAAAAALLLL! POLAND ARE THROUGH! Krychowiak makes it five out of five for the Poles with a spectacular penalty into the top-left corner!
Full-time in Saint-Etienne! Poland are THROUGH to the last-16 of the European Championships after overcoming Switzerland in a nail-biting penalty shoot out! Unfortunately for the Swiss, and Shaqiri in particular who scored the game of the tournament to make it 1-1, it took spotkicks to separate the nations, with the Poles firing all three of theirs home for the win. Thanks for joining us - see you next time for more drama!
