A Rafael cross is headed away but Sterling loses the ball once again, allowing United to retrieve possession. They will surely see the game out now.
90' +2
The home fans are now in full voice here, while the United players are slowing play down as much as they can.
90' +1
D. Welbeck enters the game and replaces Nani.
Three minutes of added time have been signalled. Last chance saloon for the away side here.
90'
You'll Never Walk Alone rings out late on but it is the home side who are enjoying all the glory on the field. Into injury time we go.
89'
CHANCE! Suarez plays in Toure but the Ivorian miscues his shot. However, Sturridge redirects the shot goalward - but it goes wide, while the England forward is given offside anyway. Toure should initially have done much better!
88'
POST! Henderson hits the post! But United survive and, several isolated moments aside, this has been a fine response to the 4-1 drubbing they suffered at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday.
87'
Liverpool stand over a dangerous free kick late on, however, and it is Suarez who takes it - but it goes straight into the wall.
86'
The home crowd cheer in delight as they sense an important victory. The result is just minutes away.
85'
SHOCKING! Sterling makes an unsurprisingly dour contribution as he overhits his pass to Suarez and it rolls out of play.
84'
Carrick's introduction has also helped and Adnan Januzaj, who came on for Kagawa 10 minutes ago, is involved in an attacking United move.
Minute
Description
83'
From the young to the very experienced and Giggs and Gerrard are still exerting heavy influence for their respective sides late on.
82'
R. Sterling enters the game and replaces V. Moses.
Raheem Sterling enters the fray in place of Moses! The young winger has made a poor start to the season, especially compared to this time last year, and he may struggle to make an impact late on here.
80'
This second half, much like the first, has been full of end-to-end football. As it stands, though, it will be United who leave Old Trafford victorious, claiming revenge for their early-season defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League.
79'
Eleven minutes remain and the visitors are still pushing for an equaliser with all their might. On this occasion, Suarez attempts to feed in Sturridge but the United defence clear and the home side then run the ball straight up the other end.
78'
A goal either way would be crucial at the moment. But can either goalkeeper be beaten? They are both in fine form.
76'
SAVE! Rooney almost scores another stunning free kick like the one he converted at the weekend against Manchester City! Mignolet reacts in time to tip it away, however. But the England striker comes back for more and forces a second consecutive save from the Belgian goalkeeper.
75'
J. Henderson gets yellow.
Liverpool are probing and Moyes responds to the pressure his side is under by bringing Michael Carrick on in an attempt to retain possession in midfield with greater frequency.
74'
M. Carrick enters the game and replaces J. Hernández.
But another miserable effort from Henderson makes sure no equaliser is forthcoming for the away side...
73'
A. Januzaj enters the game and replaces S. Kagawa.
CROSSBAR! Maybe I spoke to soon in suggesting a fruitless night for the visitors, they are certainly knocking on the door. The resultant free kick from Jones' foul is whipped at goal and a Jones header flicks it onto the bar and out for a corner.
72'
71'
P. Jones gets yellow.
SUAREZ SHOOTS! But the Uruguayan can only find the side-netting with a strike from outside the box.
INCIDENTS GALORE! De Gea produces a fantastic save from a Moses header and Jones is then booked as Liverpool win a free kick in a dangerous position.
70'
Suarez and Moses combine and the Nigerian ends up winning a corner via a block from Buttner!
69'
Time is running out for the visitors and, in truth, it looks like a fruitless night for Rodgers' side.
68'
Kelly replaces Lucas and will operate as the right-wing back in Rodgers' intricate system, with Henderson moving into the middle.
67'
M. Kelly enters the game and replaces Lucas Leiva.
Suarez now concedes a free kick as Martin Kelly prepares to come on for Liverpool.
66'
Henderson is the next to embarrass himself with a poor pass. The midfielder has hardly impressed tonight.
65'
JEERS FROM THE CROWD! Is panic starting to set in for the away side? Gerrard plays a simple ball to Enrique - although it is slightly overhit - but the Spaniard miscues his strike terribly and the home crowd jeer at will.
64'
CROSSBAR! Kagawa hits the bar with a sumptuous strike. Full credit to the Japanese midfielder but Giggs has improved the most considerably in this second half - and so have United generally. Moyes' side are now in complete control.
63'
Gerrard lunges in with a fine challenge, however, and the away side consequently win the ball back via a throw-in.
62'
Phil Jones and Giggs now enjoy a lot of space in midfield.
61'
Nani is, once again, far too ambitious and sends a right-footed volley out for a goal kick. The hosts seem to have weathered the storm somewhat.
59'
CHANCE! United launch a lightning counterattack after an extended period of Liverpool pressure but Nani wastes the chance in the area, even though he had Kagawa to pass to as a much better option than taking the shot on. The Portuguese can be known to be selfish, however, and certainly was on this occasion.
58'
Creating chances and enjoying possession mean nothing without goals, though, and Liverpool now have to score to make an impact on the night. Suarez is the latest to attempt a breakthrough but his shot is deflected out for another corner.
57'
Moses now wastes a chance, although Rodgers will be delighted with his side's response to going a goal down.
55'
PENALTY APPEALS! A Suarez-led charge ends with Kagawa seemingly handling the ball in the area! The spot-kick is not given, however, and the away side are forced to settle for a corner - and then another corner to follow-up.
54'
WASTE! Jordan Henderson has the chance to draw Liverpool level! But the young midfielder wastes the opportunity with an incompetent finish after being played clean through. That was just the chance the visitors needed to equalise and Henderson should have done better.
53'
The ensuing delivery is a poor one from Giggs, continuing a chain of several badly-hit set-pieces tonight.
52'
COMICAL! Enrique mishits a back-pass that forces Mignolet into a pressured clearance. The Liverpool stopper does his best to send the ball out for a throw, before Gerrard is later penalised for a foul in midfield.
51'
K. Touré gets yellow.
What they can do first is earn their second yellow card of the night, however, and it is Toure who is penalised for a cynical foul on Rooney.
50'
Can the visitors hit straight back?
49'
Liverpool win a free kick in the opposition half but a tackle from Evans breaks down the move that comes from the resultant set-piece.
48'
Moyes sprints up and down the touchline in celebration and United are now making the most of their new-found momentum.
46'
J. Hernández has scored a goal for Manchester United!
GOAL! Hernandez! What a start for Manchester United, who take the lead the very minute the second half resumes. Nani had won a corner for the home side and Chicharito, as he is named, tucked the ensuing set-piece away. What must Moyes have said to his players at half-time?
45'
We will see one minute of added time!
44'
Mignolet is tested - but not significantly - after an ambitious strike from distance. From the resulting counterattack, a pass to Suarez is intercepted and a series of tackles within midfield see possession swing from side to side.
43'
Rooney and Nani get involved now and a Moses clearance can only send the ball out as far as the byline, where United pick things up with a throw-in.
42'
The noise levels within Old Trafford increase as United look to press forward with Giggs and Buttner. A move that is started by Hernandez ends in frustration, however, as Liverpool thump the ball clear.
41'
R. Giggs gets yellow.
YELLOW! Giggs now gets a booking of his own, capping a far from convincing half from the Welshman.
40'
We are just five minutes away from the break now and goals have not looked likely so far. It could all change, however, especially as something must give or we will see extra-time and, potentially, penalties.
39'
Lucas Leiva gets yellow.
BOOKING! Finally, Clattenburg takes his cards out. But it is first-time offender Lucas who receives a booking after a series of fouls by other players.
37'
Another free kick is now given yet it goes to the home side for a change after a poor challenge from Skrtel. Giggs, who just committed a foul himself, protests extensively to the referee but no yellow card is given.
36'
Sturridge has been fouled yet again by a United player. This time it is Giggs with the illegal challenge, though he is not the first to target the England striker. A booking is on the cards soon.
35'
Rooney now chips the ball forward to Nani - but the ambitious, if crafty, pass is overhit and bobbles out for a goal kick. Are Manchester United missing Robin van Persie up front?
34'
The follow-up - from Suarez - is poor, though, and De Gea collects with ease and relief in equal measure.
33'
Both sides have had a lot of corners so far but have been unable to capitalise. On this occasion, however, Gerrard plays a superb cross into the area and another corner is given from yet another Smalling clearance.
32'
Sturridge is fouled but no booking is given and the away side use the resultant free kick to develop a lengthy exchange of passes. Moses, who is playing in behind the two strikers, is heavily involved and the move ends up with a corner for Liverpool after Smalling deals with a dangerous cross.
31'
The home side venture forward on a rare occasion now, though, and Hernandez and Kagawa link-up well until the attack peters out and a goal kick is given to the visitors.
30'
We have reached the half-hour mark at Old Trafford and it has been all Liverpool in recent minutes.
29'
Smalling loses possession in criminal fashion in his own half and Enrique and Moses combine to pile pressure on the United back line. The ball ends with Smalling making up for his mistake by clearing the ball to Nani.
28'
FOUL! Unsurprisingly, Suarez is found on the floor - but there was no dive on this occasion after a bad challenge from Evans.
27'
Liverpool's momentum ends with a wayward shot from Suarez - who had been missing plenty of strikes from distance in the pre-game warm up.
26'
Gerrard's delivery meets Skrtel's head but it is sent out for another corner.
25'
CORNER! Yet more attacking initiative shown by Liverpool and the dangerous pairing of Suarez and Sturridge. The Uruguayan works the ball forward and plays it into Sturridge, who moves into the penalty box and has his shot saved for a corner.
24'
Rodgers' side have now well and truly overturned the possession figures - as they very often do.
23'
Martin Skrtel and Gerrard start a flowing Liverpool move which sees contributions from Toure, Lucas and Moses but Enrique's early cross is collected easily by De Gea at the other end.
22'
BLOCK! Chris Smalling now comes to the home side's rescue after blocking a dangerous Sturridge shot. Lucas had set the striker up after intercepting the ball and United will fear the worst during this intense spell of pressure from the visitors.
21'
ANOTHER CHANCE! Enrique plays a great ball into Suarez, who passes Evans as though he is not there. But a heavy touch allows goalkeeper David De Gea to pounce and clear.
20'
There is no doubt that the away side are seeing much more of the ball now and, with the lack of cutting edge displayed up front by the hosts so far, Rodgers will be happy with his side's start tonight.
19'
CLEARCUT CHANCE! The biggest chance of the game so far falls to Sturridge! However, the Liverpool forward, who was facing pressure from Evans, shot with his left foot and could not get his effort on target. Promising signs from both Sturridge and the man who played him in: Suarez.
18'
CHANCE! United had, until now, been keeping Liverpool on the back foot but a superb through ball from Gerrard found Enrique in the box in what was the first real penetration of the hosts' back line. Still, the United defence were able to clear eventually.
17'
Suarez has a pop! But his shot is blocked and goes straight to Enrique, who continues the Liverpool move.
15'
Javier Hernandez is able to win another corner for United, forcing Enrique to knock the ball out of play. It is taken by Giggs but overplayed and Mignolet is able to start a counterattack with a quick throw. Gerrard then receives the ball in midfield but loses possession cheaply.
14'
The hosts fail to capitalise on another corner but continue to threaten nevertheless, although Mignolet is able to then keep hold of the ball after saving yet another tame effort from Kagawa.
13'
Despite the one-sided possession figures, both sides have started well tonight and we have a very well-contested encounter on our hands from the off.
12'
CLEARANCE! Enrique plays a superb cross into the area and Sturridge is all set to thump the ball home but Buttner intervenes and sends the ball out for a corner. Great defending from the full-back.
11'
An end-to-end sequence sees both sides enjoy half-chances in front of goal but we are yet to see the potency in the final third both sides are clearly capable of.
10'
The fact remains, however, that the hosts are in complete control possession-wise. But can the visitors catch them on the break?
9'
Rooney and Nani are involved once again as Lucas Leiva loses possession in midfield and the home side advance fluently upfield but Kagawa places his finish straight into the arms of Mignolet.
8'
Another foul now, this time from Kagawa, of all people, on Victor Moses, although the free kick is wasted and possession is regained by Buttner.
7'
CORNER UNITED! Great play from Nani tees up Rooney, who slips past Mamadou Sakho and has his ensuing shot tipped out of play.
6'
Referee Mark Clattenburg now gives a free kick to the home side after a late challenge from Jose Enrique on Jonny Evans. Tempers could flare tonight.
5'
Rooney misplaces a pass to Steven Gerrard and the move ends with a foul given against Giggs, who brings Daniel Sturridge down.
4'
Kagawa has been heavily involved so far and the Japan midfielder will be chomping at the bit to make an impression at Old Trafford. But so too, no doubt, will be Suarez.
3'
Alexander Buttner links-up well with Shinji Kagawa before Ryan Giggs plays the ball towards the Liverpool penalty area, only for a Kolo Toure clearance to signal and end to the United pressure. Then Nani has a shot that is saved by Simon Mignolet. All of the play has come from the hosts so far.
2'
United have enjoyed the early pressure but, as you can expect, there have been no clearcut chances as of yet. Wayne Rooney is the home side's captain for the night.
1'
We're underway at Old Trafford and the atmosphere is absolutely sensational!
I'm your host Tim Poole and I'll be bringing you all the action from Old Trafford as two titans of the Premier League are set to lock horns for the second time of the season already.
Indeed, the last time the two sides met - at Anfield earlier in the Premier League season - Brendan Rodgers' side held out for a vital 1-0 win that, at the time, propelled them to the top of the table. Since, it has not exactly been easy going for United, either, with Sunday's 4-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City signalling tough times ahead.
And the visitors - with Luis Suarez now back from a 10-game domestic suspension - will line-up as follows: Mignolet; Toure, Skrtel, Sakho, Enrique; Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson, Suarez, Moses; Sturridge. Subs: Jones, Alberto, Aspas, Sterling, Ibe, Kelly, Wisdom.
Good evening and welcome to live play-by-play commentary of the standout tie in the third round of the Capital One Cup. Yes, it is almost time for the big one - as big as it gets in British football - Manchester United versus Liverpool.
For the home side - and boss David Moyes in particular - tonight will be about more than just getting through to the next round of a trophy one might not usually prioritise. Instead, it is about getting their season back on track - and seeking revenge against Liverpool.
Liverpool, too, lost at the weekend and both sides have responded by sending out strong teams tonight. Manchester United will look like this: De Gea; Rafael, Smalling, Evans, Buttner; Jones, Giggs, Nani, Rooney, Kagawa; Hernandez. Subs: Anderson, Carrick, Welbeck, Fabio Da Silva, Zaha, Amos, Januzaj.
Kick-off is but minutes away: get ready for a rollercoaster ride.
HALF-TIME! An entertaining and fiercely-contested half is brought to an end.
The star of the half has actually been referee Mark Clattenburg but both sides have given a good account of themselves in what is proving to be a classic cup tie. Manchester United started the stronger of the two sides but Liverpool slowly took control of the half.
Make no mistake, however, things are hotting up nicely for another entertaining and end-to-end half, which should produce a goal or two - if not more.
Something has to give and neither manager will want to be on the losing side tonight, so stay tuned to see who can triumph; the second half is just under 10 minutes away.
After the visitors began dominating possession, Daniel Sturridge enjoyed the chance of the half but caught the ball with the outside of his left boot on the finish. Shinji Kagawa and Luis Suarez have been the closest to break the deadlock otherwise, although neither have executed any pinpoint shooting.
GAME OVER! Liverpool are out of the Capital One Cup - and Manchester United are through to the fourth round!
A second-half Javier Hernandez winner was enough to see David Moyes' side past their great rivals and keep alive the Scot's dream of lifting his first major trophy (Community Shield aside) as United boss. The goal came one minute after the break and Liverpool were unable to retaliate, despite a string of chances.
Brendan Rodgers' side will be concerned that they could not capitalise on so much possession - not for the first time in his tenure - while the absence of Phillipe Coutinho was sorely felt once again.
Still, there are not many sides that can take something from Old Trafford against Manchester United. And tonight belonged to Moyes' side as a result. That's all from our live-text coverage, we hope you enjoyed our commentary and look forward to seeing you again soon!
