Jose Mourinho puts his faith in youngster Raphael Varane to partner Sergio Ramos in the heart of Real Madrid's defence with Pepe left on the bench. Xabi Alonso, though, does return to Los Blancos' starting line-up alongside Sami Khedira in midfield. Cristiano Ronaldo faces his old side for the first time since making a £80 million switch in 2009.
While Sir Alex Ferguson opts for Jonny Evans alongside Rio Ferdinand in defence with Danny Welbeck and Shinji Kagawa supporting Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. Phil Jones continues in his defensive midfield role, with Sir Alex suggesting Rafael will be tasked with keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet.
Goal.com's man in the Spanish capital Greg Stobart reports: "The Manchester United players are warming up in the pitch to the backdrop of non-stop singing from their fans housed high up in the stand to my right. They will be outnumbered 20-to-one tonight but they will certainly make sure they are heard."

Danny Welbeck gave Manchester United a shock lead with a header, but Cristiano Ronaldo went one better, scoring an outrageous headed effort to get the hosts back on level terms. Mourinho's men have been on the front foot for most of the half but the visitors remain a serious threat on the break after a breathless first half.
