9'
Suarez is caught by Chris Smalling midway inside the United half of the pitch, resulting in a free-kick for Barcelona. We're off! United get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s International Champions Cup game between Barcelona and Manchester United at FedEx Field.
So far, so good for United, who have four wins from as many pre-season games. Their trip to America has proven to be a positive one, with Real Madrid the latest side to fall to the Red Devils after their tie went to penalties. With Manchester City, Real Salt Lake and LA Galaxy also failing to get the better of them, Jose Mourinho should be pleased with how his preparations are currently going.
Juan Mata and Ander Herrera are unlikely to feature this evening after picking up knocks against Real Salt Lake and Real Madrid, respectively, but new signings Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku are set to play an important role once again. The latter has already managed to bag two goals since joining the club for an eye-watering fee, and he’ll be aiming to impress again against strong opposition.
United’s pre-season preparations started 11 days ago, and in that time they’ve been hard at work all across America. Barcelona, on the other hand, only got started on Saturday, but they kicked off Ernesto Valverde’s reign in style - mainly thanks to an excellent display by Neymar - with a 2-1 victory against Juventus, setting themselves up nicely for tonight’s clash.
Barcelona haven’t been particularly busy in the transfer market so far, but they did well to capture the signature of talented Portuguese defender Nelson Semedo. The former Benfica man made his debut in the second half against Juventus and has been handed a starting role tonight.
There’s just over fifteen minutes to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this evening...
Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind; Pogba, Carrick, Lingard; Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, Rashford.
Barcelona substitutes: Marlon, Pique, Denis Suarez, Turan, Iniesta, Vermaelen, Alcacer, Digne, Roberto, Vidal, Ortola, Samper, Douglas Pereira, Munir, Ezkieta.
Barcelona XI (4-3-3): Cillessen; Semedo, Mascherano, Umtiti, Alba; Rakitic, Busquets, Alena; Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar.
Manchester United substitutes: Bailly, Jones, Rojo, Mata, Martial, Andreas Pereira, Young, Romero, Herrera, Shaw, Fosu-Mensah, Fellaini, Mitchell, Darmian, Tuanzebe, McTominay, Castro.
Ernesto Valverde has decided to make six changes to the Barcelona side that started the victory against Juventus on Saturday, with Nelson Semedo, Samuel Umtiti, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Carles Alena and Luis Suarez coming into the starting line-up to replace Aleix Vidal, Gerard Pique, Lucas Digne, Sergi Samper, Andres Iniesta and Paco Alcacer, respectively.
Meanwhile, United boss Jose Mourinho has made eight alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Sergio Romero, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Matteo Darmian, Marouane Fellaini, Andreas Pereira and Anthony Martial making way for David De Gea, Antonio Valencia, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind, Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku.
The two teams are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: BARCELONA 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED
It's been an impressive performance by Barcelona so far, and they deservedly lead at the half-time break. They've constantly looked comfortable in possession, with the United back line really struggling to deal with Neymar, Suarez and Messi, all of whom have been excellent. Too many pockets of space have been left available by the Premier League club, who have also found it difficult to get the ball up to Lukaku after managing to start positively.
The two teams are making their way back out onto the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: BARCELONA 1-0 MANCHESTER UNITED
The second half was a far more laid-back affair than the first, but, in the end, Barcelona will be happy with a well-deserved win. They did all the hard work before the break, with Messi, Suarez and Neymar constantly causing problems in and around the United penalty area. In the second half, they sat back and looked more defensively compact, which frustrated their opponents and made life very difficult for them.
As for United, they shined on a few occasions but, overall, couldn't quite hit the heights they managed against Real Madrid and Manchester City. Rashford was arguably the best of the bunch, with Lukaku also performing well when given the ball, but, in the end, they didn't have enough in the tank to find a way past Cillessen.
