Save from Tim Howard. The final whistle blows, and Austria has defeated the United States, 1-0.
90' +2
K. Wimmer enters the game and replaces C. Leitgeb.
Appeal for handball, but a foul is called against the USA instead. Looks like Wondo was whistled for climbing his defenders' back.
90'
C. Wondolowski enters the game and replaces D. Beasley.
Free kick from Altidore goes wide and he looks like he's just missed his train because he forgot his laptop bag and had to run back and get it and got back just in time to see it leave the station.
88'
Boyd is making a general nuisance of himself in the Austria box, as Das Team brings it in tight to try to seal the victory.
86'
Boyd traps the ball, goes back to Mix. Mix finds EJ who beats his man and has a go from way out. It's blocked as soon as it enters the box.
85'
P. Zulechner enters the game and replaces L. Hinterseer.
84'
Austria with a sustained spell of possession here, content to move the ball around.
81'
E. Lichaj enters the game and replaces G. Cameron.
F. Klein enters the game and replaces M. Harnik.
Cameron had an excellent match at RB. You'll probably be seeing him there again. I'm not sure Brad Evans could've done what Cameron did tonight.
80'
M. Suttner enters the game and replaces M. Arnautović.
Michael Bradley decides to put this on his back. Turns, makes some space and chips over to Eddie Johnson who can't quite handle it.
76'
S. Klještan enters the game and replaces A. Bedoya.
Not the night, or the November, Bedoya wanted. Disappeared for stretches and didn't seem comfortable crossing the ball from the wing.
Minute
Description
75'
In both of these November friendlies, Altidore has excelled in the latter portions of the match. Part of that might be his fitness. The other part is that he's been paired with another forward, Johannsson in Scotland and Boyd tonight. Seems much more comfortable when that's the situation.
73'
Cameron with a nice cross and Gonzalez knocks it to Altidore. Altidore controls and thumps it, but it's calmly saved by Almer.
72'
A. Ivanschitz enters the game and replaces D. Alaba.
We were perhaps unfair to Alaba in the live comm. He had a really good night but didn't get it done when he had a chance in the final third. Excellent passing from him, though.
71'
The Americans once again showing more life in the last 30 minutes than they did previously. Bradley and Cameron both trying to open up Austria. Boyd turns and fires. It goes over.
68'
V. Kavlak enters the game and replaces M. Janko.
67'
T. Boyd enters the game and replaces J. Jones.
Terrence Boyd comes on to an ovation from his club fans in Vienna. Jermaine Jones had a night that showed why so many U.S. fans aren't fond of him without exhibiting the reason others (including Klinsmann) are so fond of him. He'll be in the World Cup squad barring injury, but not his best showing.
66'
The Americans had it in the six-yard box but couldn't knock it in. Diskerud looks confident and was part of the set up there. Good play from Almer to make sure it stayed out.
64'
Nice anticipation from Cameron to step up. He's had a good day at RB. Eddie Johnson ended up with the ball on the left and was trying to beat two men. Nearly did so but eventually he's wrangled and it's out for a goal kick.
62'
The U.S. charged forward and seemed to have a quick counter on but it petered out somewhere on the right side. Cameron and Jones were both forward on the left if Beasley or Johnson had switched the field.
58'
Eddie Johnson is in (not two Mix Diskeruds) and he gets his first touch. He'll be eager to impress not only the U.S. coaching staff but potentially club suitors with a MLS move rumored to be in the works for the Sounders attacker.
56'
E. Johnson enters the game and replaces B. Shea.
M. Diskerud enters the game and replaces A. Jóhannsson.
Johannsson also off. He showed he still brings a lot of energy, even in a starting role. Not sure he was fully comfortable not playing up top.
Brek Shea comes off after a night that was kind of a mixed bag. He's on the fringe and he can't afford a match in which he doesn't come out. Shea will have to get minutes somewhere.
53'
Jermaine Jones' trash talking can be maximized playing against German-speaking opponents.
52'
Jermaine Jones and Marko Arnautović get into it and the referee steps in. They've been battling back and forth with both putting in some fouls and some after-whistle activity on each other.
49'
The U.S. gets let off the hook. DaMarcus Beasley stays back and plays Harnik onside. He rushes forward, fakes a shot, and then switches to the other foot and blasts it wide. Probably should've passed it off.
47'
No substitutions from Klinsmann at the half, as is the norm for him. We'll still see plenty of changes later.
Shea continues to get involved, trying to find Michael Bradley over the top but sending it too far for the midfielder.
46'
We're underway in the second half with Arlo White asking if we'd believe Hungarian referee Istan Vad's sister is an official in the Hungarian third division. I would, Arlo.
On the pitch, Brek Shea had an opening but eventually Garics ran him down.
45'
Nice bit of play by Bedoya on the right side with the half coming to a close. Cameron comes forward and they work it between them before Bedoya crosses in. Shea ends up winning the corner.
Bradley is taking the set pieces, and that one found Altidore in the box. He pushes it wide of the post and the referee blows the halftime whistle.
43'
Bradley has a shot from close range, and it's blocked! Altidore pulled back and the Roma midfielder's effort is blocked by Garics. The move started when Shea held up on the left side, stumbled and was able to move it to Bradley. Good from the U.S., but still no goal.
41'
Tim Howard came to the top of the box to collect and nearly went out of the 18. Then an Austria attacker gave him a little love tap, which Howard wasn't too fond of. Takes a brave man to mess with Howard in general, but especially with that beard he's sporting these days.
39'
Bedoya won possession in the center of the park and attempted to slip one through to Altidore, but it's a bit too heavy.
37'
Stoke City man Geoff Cameron just took two long throws in quick succession. Wonder where he learned that?
36'
Bradley atones for losing possession with a fantastic ball over the top to Johannsson who wins a corner for the Americans.
35'
Austria seeking another right away. Bradley was dispossessed and Austria fired in from outside the 18, but Howard had it covered. He actually spilled it, but collected quickly.
33'
M. Janko has scored a goal for Austria! Assist by G. Garics.
GOAL Austria. Terrific move from the home team. They cut through the midfield and then Alaba sees Garics free down the right side. Garics is able to put in a cross and Janko finishes it off for the opener.
31'
Beasley and Shea try to work something up the left hand side, but neither ever seemed to be fully in control of their bodies or the ball.
30'
Austria's turn to be offside with Omar Gonzalez stepping up to spring the trap on Das Team.
28'
Johannsson is chasing the ball all over the pitch, pressuring the goalkeeper, defenders, pretty much anybody who has possession in Austria's half.
27'
Michael Bradley comes forward a bit and plays with Bedoya. Bradley puts a ball over the top to Jozy Altidore, who is flagged for offside. The replay shows he is a step ahead. Good call.
25'
Again the U.S. defense is caught out but gets a stroke of luck. Omar Gonzalez blocked a Hinterseer cross that, had it gotten in the box, would've found an Austrian forward with yards of space.
24'
Some of it is because of injuries, but if you'd said before this summer's Gold Cup that the U.S. would start an attacking midfield made up of Alejandro Bedoya, Aron Johannsson and Brek Shea, you would've gotten a few strange looks. You might still get a few strange looks.
22'
My goodness, David Alaba was the recipient of a beautiful pass inside the 18-yard box, but it was as though he was in the movie Inception. He couldn't control the ball on his left foot and finally after what seemed like ages, Omar Gonzalez came out and took the ball off him.
21'
Jermaine Jones is due a couple bad giveaways each match and just produced one. Bailed out by Michael Bradley, who is due a couple Jermaine Jones bailouts each match.
20'
Altidore was all alone at the halfway line, but holds it up and draws a foul. That's the difference between Altidore at this time last year and Altidore now. He's learned how to use his size and strength much more effectively.
19'
The USA is definitely playing with much more fervor than it did against Scotland. You'd have to think there would've been a goal - from someone - had they come out firing like this in Glasgow.
18'
Austria push forward after getting a break, but again Tim Howard easily puts an end to the attack.
16'
Well, there's something from Johannsson. He first an excellent shot in and forces the save from Robert Almer.
Well, it looked like the U.S. had a goal from the resulting corner, but the referee hasn't called it. Cameron headed the ball back, it hits the Austrian defender and seems to go into Almer's net or at least handball on Arnautović. Nothing is given, and it stays 0-0.
15'
Jozy Altidore pops up, beating a defender and putting in a long shot. He's unable to get it on target and it's out for a goal kick.
Back to Koller, he was rumored to be a candidate for the Switzerland job, which will come open after the World Cup, and several club jobs, but re-upped with Das Team, Austria's awesome nickname.
14'
There appears to be a message of support for Marcel Koller, the Swiss who has recently signed to be the Austrian coach through Euro 2016.
13'
It's Harnik again who turns beautifully to get past John Anthony Brooks. He then plays the ball right across the mouth of goal but Janko didn't make a run and it rolls out harmlessly.
12'
Another dangerous spell from Austria as Hinterseer lets a ball run to the man behind him and Austria is able to get an effort off. Howard is equal to the task, but Austria is certainly on the front foot here.
11'
Martin Harnik cuts to his left foot to get past Beasley atop the 18, but his effort goes wide of Howard's net.
10'
Johannsson takes a long ball from Tim Howard and it goes out of play. It continues to rain in Vienna, which is something to keep an eye on. The pitch seems to be slick but holding up well.
8'
Aron Johannsson started in the midfield as Jurgen Klinsmann needed to find someone to create plays with Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey both home nursing injuries. He always brings energy but hasn't created anything just yet. Still plenty of time to go.
7'
The Americans maintain a bit of possession. Michael Bradley was just dispossesed. You don't see that too often. The ball fell to a teammate, though.
5'
Gonzalez makes a savvy tackle in the penalty box but the U.S. defense doesn't look overly confident early.
Brek Shea is sliding all over the pitch and nearly gave the ball away because of it. Might see him make a footwear switch if that continues.
3'
Lukas Hinterseer's first action in an Austria shirt is to blast a shot well over Tim Howard's crossbar.
1'
We're underway with the U.S. wearing its lovely white centennial kits. DaMarcus Beasley, at 31-years-old, has played more minutes for the U.S. than anyone else this year and makes a nice clearance.
Welcome to Goal's live commentary for the United States' final match of 2013. It takes place in Vienna, Austria. While the Austrians didn't make the World Cup, they were victims of being in the same group as Germany and Ibra and should provide a nice test for Jurgen Klinsmann's side.
I'm Jon Arnold, and I'll be providing today's live commentary. As usual the U.S. will be in a 4-2-3-1 formation today. Tim Howard; Geoff Cameron, Omar Gonzalez, John Anthony Brooks, DaMarcus Beasley; Michael Bradley, Jermaine Jones; Alejandro Bedoya, Aron Johannsson, Brek Shea; Jozy Altidore
Geoff Cameron mans the right back spot, which he does for Stoke City. Stoke winger Brek Shea is also into the starting lineup, something that hasn't been said about him yet this season with the Potters. Shea was a standout in the match against Scotland on Friday. We'll see if he can replicate his substitute form for a full 90 minutes.
Jurgen Klinsmann won't be happy that Geoff Cameron's header wasn't given as a goal and of course that his side conceded, but it was a better half than either the Americans played against Scotland.
The defense has been a bit suspect at times, but John Anthony Brooks has hardly played with the U.S. and we're still seeing Omar Gonzalez settle in. There's room for worry and concern but probably not outright panic yet.
For Austria, the goal was an excellent move, but it'll still be frustrated at some of the inability to connect in the final third.
We'll certainly see plenty of substitutes with Klinsmann hinting Terrence Boyd, Michael Orozco, Mix Diskerud and Sacha Kljestan, among others, could see time.
The last match of 2013 doesn't really sum up the year for the U.S., although it does mean it was a year of immense success bookended by disappointment.
Geoff Cameron had an excellent match at right back, few others showed much of anything. Still, Cameron's header that appeared to cross the line will stick in the craw of U.S. fans.
