Hazard goes down under Xhaka's challenge, but the referee isn't interested and Basel clear.
90' +3
Mata plays a diagonal ball into the box looking for Hazard, but Schar rises high to clear. The Blues then waste the throw with some more sloppy play but they pick possession up in their own half again with just a minute left.
90' +1
Chelsea's passing is very loose as first Hazard then Ivanociv give it away. Eto'o does well to pick the ball up in midfield before playing a one-two with Mata, but he has to take a touch and it gives Schar a chance to challenge him in the box, making his shot easier for Sommer to collect.
90'
Chelsea have it at the back with Luiz and Cahill as we enter four minutes of added time. Can they find a goal?
89'
Ivanovic plays it to Hazard, who shows great skill to cut inside the defender before firing a ball across the six-yard box, but it evades everyone. Chelsea regroup and press again, and Oscar has another effort from distance, but this time it's straight at Sommer.
88'
T. Xhaka enters the game and replaces Mohamed Salah.
Chelsea have a throw deep on the right-hand side. Time is rapidly running out for the hosts as Basel haul off Salah, who has been superb tonight.
86'
Play resumes as Chelsea give it back to Sommer, while Schar rejoins the action with the visitors in possession.
85'
Schar is in pain in the area after being on the receiving end of Ba's attempt at a shot from Hazard's ball through. It looks like the defender's leg buckled underneath him, but he's up and has managed to limp off for treatment.
84'
More danger for the hosts as Salah finds Delgado in space, and the substitute works it back to Diaz who tries a shot from the edge of the box, but it deflects off Luiz and loses all its pace. Chelsea have the ball once more.
83'
Not long left at all for the hosts to get back into this. They look utterly shellshocked and Basel are moving it around with confidence.
Minute
Description
82'
A. Ajeti enters the game and replaces V. Stocker.
81'
M. Streller has scored a goal for Basel! Assist by M. Delgado.
STRELLER SCORES!! BASEL LEAD!! A swift counter wins a corner as Streller's shot deflects wide off Luiz, and the striker gets in front of both Cahill and Eto'o at the near post to nod it towards goal, and Cech can only parry it into the bottom corner. Stunning.
79'
Ba shows his strength to keep hold of the ball and work it back to Hazard, who gives it back to the striker, and he pushes out wide with it to hammer a dangerous ball into the area, but no-one's there and it goes for a goal kick.
78'
Massive relief for Chelsea as Schar runs through the middle and gets through the defence. He has two men in support but his pass to Stocker - who had followed him all the way - is cut out by Cahill and the hosts survive.
77'
Substitute John Obi Mikel makes his first impression on the game, working hard to win the ball in midfield and give Chelsea possession as they press for a winner.
76'
D. Ba enters the game and replaces F. Lampard.
M. Obi enters the game and replaces M. van Ginkel.
75'
Basel are almost through again as Salah and Stocker link up superbly in the middle before trying to slot it through for Safari, who had bombed down the left to make it into the box, but the pass is poor and Chelsea clear.
74'
Ivanovic drives forward and keeps going as Mata picks it up on the edge of the box and tries to lift it over the defence, but it doesn't quite come off and Basel clear.
73'
It looks like the Blues are readying Demba Ba as they look for a winner, having created very few chances tonight.
71'
Mohamed Salah has scored a goal for Basel! Assist by M. Streller.
SALAH SCORES!! Basel are level!! He's been the biggest danger tonight, and Salah gets a goal after a latching on to a pass wide from Streller, curling it superbly with his left foot across the goal and into the bottom corner. Chelsea are stunned.
70'
Chance! It's squared to Lampard in midfield, and the England man dinks a first-time ball through for Eto'o who springs the offside trap but can't force it past Sommer, who had raced off his line to close the striker down.
68'
Salah - who hasn't had much joy after switching to the left flank - pops up on the right again and tries to take it past Luiz to pull back a cross, but the ball just goes over the line and Chelsea have a goal kick.
67'
Mata enters the game and replaces Willian.
Luiz concedes a free kick in midfield and might be a bit fortunate to escape a booking after kicking the ball away, while Juan Mata is set to come on for debutant Willian.
65'
M. Delgado enters the game and replaces G. Sio.
Lampard swings in the free kick from out wide on the right and Ivanovic meets it to head across goal, but Streller is there to divert it wide.
64'
M. Díaz gets yellow.
Willian tries to break down the right and get away from Diaz, which he manages to do well, but the midfielder cynically brings him down, earning himself a place in the referee's book.
63'
Safari has rejoined the action with a less-than-fetching bandage around his head, but at least Basel are back up to 11 men. There's a slight scare as Stocker manages to get the wrong side of Ivanovic in the box, but before he gets his shot away the referee blows for handball by the Basel man.
62'
Chance! Oscar looks for Eto'o but it comes back to him, and the midfielder plays it wide to Hazard in space, but the Belgian blasts his effort over the bar.
61'
There's a break in play as Safari goes down with a blow to the head after a challenge with Willian, but the game resumes after the defender goes off for treatment, and Chelsea have the ball again.
59'
Cahill cuts out an Ivanov ball forward but it falls to Streller, who can't get a good contact on his shot from the edge of the box and it rolls harmlessly behind for a goal kick.
58'
There's a little bit more zip to Chelsea's attacks now, and they all seem to involve Oscar. He, Hazard and Cole work it around on the left flank before he tries another effort which deflects wide. Ivanovic rises high to meet the corner from eight yards but it's straight at Sommer.
56'
CROSSBAR!! Oscar looks like Chelsea's best hope for another goal tonight, and he exchanges several passes with Hazard out wide before collecting the ball on the left-hand corner of the box and curling a stunning effort on to the crossbar and out for a goal kick.
55'
Basel move into a decent position on to the edge of the area and Streller plays it wide for Voser, whose first-time cross is disappointing and goes straight behind.
54'
Sio drills the ball out to Safari on the left, and the full-back has plenty of space to fire in a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box, but it's turned behind by Cahill and Chelsea clear the resulting corner easily.
53'
It's still eerily quiet at Stamford Bridge. Despite their lead there still hasn't really been much to excite the home crowd.
52'
Diaz swings in a high early ball from the right, but it's easy for Cech. Ivanovic's ball through for Hazard is cut out but Oscar works hard to win possession in midfield before winning a free kick.
50'
Chelsea break forward quickly and Oscar lofts a superb pass over for Eto'o. The ball is worked back over to the right-hand side for Willian, who drills a low cross towards the near post but Schar is there to slide in and clear.
49'
Eto'o goes in hard on Diaz to win the ball well, but he follows through with his trailing leg to take the Basel midfielder out and the referee blows for a free kick.
48'
Frei does well to get the ball forward to Sio, who has plenty of men forward with him, but the striker is caught offside, giving Chelsea the chance to regroup.
47'
Willian is brought down by Safari on the right-hand side as Chelsea dominate the early possession, before Oscar forces a throw on the other side for the hosts.
46'
And Chelsea start the ball rolling again as the second half gets underway.
45'
Oscar has scored a goal for Chelsea! Assist by F. Lampard.
OSCAR SCORES!! Chelsea are in front! It's a lovely move as Luiz strides into the Basel half before finding Lampard, who slots a perfect pass through the defence for Oscar, and the Brazilian latches on to it to drill it low across goal into the far corner.
44'
Hazard is frustrated at having to come deep but draws a foul from Ivanov. It's eventually worked to Cahill on the edge of the box, and the defender tries a first-time volleyed effort but Ivanov blocks and Basel clear.
42'
M. van Ginkel gets yellow.
Van Ginkel goes diving into another challenge, this time on Sio, and rightly earns a yellow card. Diaz swings the set piece in from the left and it evades Lampard before bouncing through for Cech.
41'
Marcelo Diaz looks for Streller through the left channel, but Ivanovic does well to cover behind Cahill and hammer the ball out for a throw.
40'
Ivanov gives it straight to Hazard and he finds Eto'o, but Fabian Schar stands firm and manages to steal the ball away from the Cameroon striker.
38'
Hazard breaks forward and plays it through to Willian in the box, but he knew he was offside before he received it and Chelsea lose out.
36'
Chelsea have completed twice as many passes as the Swiss side, but are finding it rather frustrating. Oscra shows some superb quick touches to burst into the box past two defenders but he eventually loses control and gives it away.
34'
Streller has it in midfield and moves forward with Sio and Salah in support. He looks for the latter but Luiz cuts it out and Chelsea manage to break quickly before Ivan Ivanov has to cut out a cross and send it behind for a corner, which is cleared at the near post.
32'
Chelsea finally look like getting in behind the visitors as Oscar breaks through the middle with several men in support, but his pass for Eto'o peeling off to the left is poor and easily cut out.
31'
Lampard squares it to Van Ginkel, who miscontrols and ends up sliding in wildly on Sio, giving the visitors a free kick. The Basel striker tries an audacious effort from range but Cech claims comfortably.
30'
Salah - who's looked the best attacking outlet for Basel so far - has a chance as he makes a driving run forward before cutting inside to unleash a shot with his left, but it's way off target and Chelsea have a goal kick.
29'
Luiz plays a delightful driven ball forward for Willian on the left touchline, but the Brazilian's touch lets him down and he gives away the ball.
28'
This time it's Voser who bursts forward, reaching the edge of the area before flicking a pass with the outside of his boot looking for Stocker, but it runs straight out for a throw.
27'
A rare spell of possession for Basel now as Valentin Stocker brings it into the Chelsea half, but his pass wide for Salah is cleared for a throw by Luiz.
26'
It's pretty quiet in Stamford Bridge, and there hasn't been much on the pitch to ignite the atmosphere thus far. Eto'o turns well and lays off to Hazard, who skips across the defence before flashing a shot high and wide from the edge of the box.
24'
First half-chance of the match as it's pulled back to Lampard on the edge of the box, but his 20-yard effort deflects wide, although it appears none of the officials have seen it and Basel - incredibly - have a goal kick.
23'
Hazard is angry with the referee after going down on the left-hand edge of the box from an innocuous challenge by Kay Voser, but the official gives nothing. Replays show the Belgium international made something from almost nothing, there.
22'
Lovely skill from Eto'o as he collects a pass from Hazard on the left before flicking it past two defenders for Ashley Cole to chase, but the flag goes up for offside.
21'
Hazard picks it up on the left but is pressed all the way back to Luiz. Basel are getting behind the ball well and making it difficult for Chelsea to get through them.
19'
Streller is brought down again, this time on the left-hand side and much deeper inside Chelsea's half, giving the visitors a chance to hammer it into the box, but Diaz's ball is easily cleared at the near post.
18'
Luiz presses high to put pressure on Streller in the centre circle, but is adjudged to have fouled the Basel skipper and concedes the free kick.
17'
Chance for Basel as Salah breaks free down the right and has Giovanni Sio to aim for in the box, but his low cross is cut out by Cahill, who read the play well.
16'
Oscar puts pressure on Fabian Frei right on the line and the Basel man concedes a corner. The Brazilian's delivery causes all sorts of havoc in the six-yard box but Ivanovic and Gary Cahill can't get anything on it before the referee blows for a fould on Sommer.
14'
The Blues try a quick corner but Hazard loses out and Basel break quickly through Salah, prompting a well-timed challenge from Luiz on halfway to win possession back for the hosts.
13'
Chelsea's attacking trio are switching positions all the time, but it means there are few options for players on the ball at the moment. The hosts still have the ball as Hazard sets Eto'o going down the left before the striker wins a corner.
11'
Luiz's long ball looking for Van Ginkel goes straight through to Yann Sommer in the Basel goal. The midfielder had made a good run past Eto'o, there.
9'
It's been a measured, but comfortable start from Chelsea. They're enjoying plenty of possession in the Basel half but haven't had the chance to create anything substantial yet.
8'
Van Ginkel sets Willian away on the right-hand side. THe Brazilian looks full of energy and movement tonight, and he wins a corner for the Blues but it is eventually cleared by Marco Streller.
6'
Lampard's ball evades Luiz and it comes out to Samuel Eto'o on the left, before Mohamed Salah wins possession from the striker and brings it forward for the visitors before being brought down by Van Ginkel in midfield.
5'
Good work from Eden Hazard to break down the left for the hosts, before he's forced to pass back. Chelsea still have it though and are throwing plenty of men forward before Willian wins a corner.
3'
Oscar wins a corner for Chelsea on the right, but Frank Lampard's delivery fails to beat the first man before Oscar fails to produce a decent cross at the second attempt.
2'
It's a relatively slow start as Branislav Ivanovic gives away a free kick in the Basel half, before the visitors concede possession and David Luiz picks it up for Chelsea.
1'
We're up and running as Basel get us started in west London.
Good evening and welcome to LIVE play-by-play coverage of the Champions League clash between Chelsea and Basel at Stamford Bridge. The Blues ran out 3-1 winners in the second leg of the Europa League semi-final here last season, and are strong favourites to take the points tonight.
The teams have been announced, so let's take a look, starting with Jose Mourinho's men...
BASEL: Sommer; Voser, Schar, Ivanov, Safari; Salah, Diaz, F Frei, Stocker; Sio, Streller. // Subs: Vailati, P Degen, Ajeti, Suaro, D Degen, Delgado, Xhaka.
So, the big news is that Willian makes his debut for Chelsea, while Marco van Ginkel earns a start and Samuel Eto'o continues up front despite a lacklustre first appearance against Everton. Juan Mata is on the bench, while Fernando Torres doesn't even make the squad.
Mourinho has never lost the opening group match in the Champions League, while Swiss sides have only one twice in 30 away matches in England. The odds aren't in Basel's favour tonight...
The teams march out on to the Stamford Bridge turf. Just a few minutes until tonight's Champions League fixtures get underway.
And that's HALF-TIME at Stamford Bridge, and a perfect ending to a frustrating opening period for Chelsea as Oscar gives them the lead with their first shot on target.
There will be sighs of relief among the Chelsea camp after that goal by Oscar. It was starting to look like it wouldn't be their night. What do Basel do now? They had contained the Blues well but need to press and find a goal of their own.
What about Chelsea? Do they carry on, or will Mourinho change things around? There's not much width at the moment, making it very congested in midfield, so perhaps we'll a change of tactics rather than personnel.
There haven't been many goals elsewhere, either. Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Napoli are all 1-0 up at home to Zenit, Ajax and Dortmund respectively. Everywhere else, it's goalless.
Not long until the restart at Stamford Bridge, then. Will we see more shots, let alone goals, in this half?
That's FULL-TIME at Stamford Bridge and Basel have beaten Chelsea!! What a superb result for the Swiss champions. Salah and Streller have done the job for the visitors after a really disappointing, disjointed performance from the Blues.
Chelsea had gone 29 Champions League home games in a row without defeat before tonight (stat via Opta). That makes tonight's result even more impressive.
And that's all from the Champions League tonight after what turned out to be a stunning result in west London. Thanks for joining us and we'll see you soon for more LIVE play-by-play action!
